Southern Ladies Quilt Guild

‘Newly formed Quilt Guild encourages novice and expert quilters alike’

Since the time of Adam and Eve, people have been stitching together things, from then leaves and hides to today’s colorful cottons and silk.

Quilts. The word alone can conjure up memories of grandmothers and soft comfort, but today’s quilts have evolved into something more than simply a warm covering for cold nights. Modern or traditional, machine pieced or hand stitched, applique, paper-piecing, quilting is seeing resurgence in popularity. In today’s world quilts are art, they are clothing, home décor, baby accessories and so much more – as well as more traditional uses as wonderful coverings for a bed.

The members of the Southern Ladies Quilt Guild have officially begun its mission of ‘Promoting the appreciation, enjoyment, and knowledge of quilting as an art form and a craft to its membership and to the general public. The Guild encourages quilting for the benefit of charitable causes and provides opportunities to broaden skills through educational programs, meetings and workshops.’

If you are looking to begin sewing and think quilting is out of reach, think again – even if you have never before slid a piece of thread through the eye of a needle. Simply put, quilters cut apart fabric into smaller pieces and sew it back together in a different design, using the variety of fabric types, colors and patterns available today to suit everyone’s desire. And with a few simple tools to make it easier, a completed quilt top is in your near future. And if you are an experienced quilter and are looking to try something different, whether it is learning a new technique or just wiping the rust off an old skill, Southern Ladies Quilt Guild is here for you.

Meetings will be held at 10 a.m., the first Monday of each month. The location may change later but meetings are currently held at Central Church of Christ on North Main Street, downtown Sparta. Guests are welcome to attend two meetings prior to joining.
